The Key Learning Areas in our Queensland curriculum are derived from factors identified by research as being associated with later success in school. The five key learning areas are:
- Social & Personal Learning
- Health & Physical Learning
- Language Learning and Communication
- Early Mathematical Understandings
- Active Learning Processes
Children have an opportunity to participate in activities which promote development in these Key Learning Areas on a daily basis. A well graded and logical set of topics, which are useful, interesting and relevant for each age group provide the context for our activities. Subsequently, activities are chosen which best suit the focus area of development and the age of the class. Many activities involve a number of different Learning Areas, incorporating a multi-facetted approach to learning.
Our Key Learning Areas focus on developing children’s abilities to:
- Make decisions
- Solve problems
- Develop thinking processes
- Develop effective communication
- Develop a positive disposition towards learning
- Develop the ability to work with others
- Develop a positive sense of self
English and Vietnamese are both used for a variety of activities in the children’s daily schedule. While Vietnamese is used as the predominate language in our Nursery and Sensory classes, and continual focus is given to ensure excellent Vietnamese skills for our students, English is phased in increasingly as the children get older. We believe an ever increasing exposure to English in different contexts gives young learners a well rounded knowledge of the language, and broadens their opportunities in the future.
